Some commercial dog treats contain ingredients that are not necessarily healthy for your dog. Because the dog treats must stand the test of time on the grocery store shelf, they have preservatives. Those very same preservatives that keep the food from spoiling can contribute to long term health issues in your dog.
To combat the potentially harmful ingredients you can make your own dog treats with homemade recipes. When making dog treats, always remember the foods dogs cannot eat. The list includes, but is not limited to:
- Chocolate (use carob instead)
- Onions and garlic
- Grapes, currants and raisins
- Macadamia nuts
- Avocado
- Mushrooms
- Yeast
- Alcohol (that’s a no brainer)
- Excessive salt or sugar
- Be careful with dairy products because some dogs are lactose intolerant.

These items have a high salt content.

If you’re going to make dog treats from homemade recipes, you might as well make them as healthy as possible. Remember, you’re making a healthy alternative to the less than healthy commercial dog treats.
