Calm Your Dog with a Thundershirt

July 15, 2011 | By

Here’s an interesting device for helping dogs to cope with fear, stress and other negative emotions dogs undergo.  The device (well not really a device) is called a Thundershirt.

Usually I don’t do reviews unless I’ve tried a product first hand, but this one had me curious.  Apparently while wrapped snug in the Thundershirt, dogs feel calm and secure (similar to swaddling a newborn), and events that previously unnerved the dog no longer have the same unnerving affect.

No More Thunderstorm Shakes

For example, if your dog exhibits nervous reactions during thunderstorms, home renovation construction or other loud noises, rather than sending the dog outside or over to the neighbor’s house for safe keeping, just wrap Fido in a Thundershirt.  No more panting, drooling and nervous pacing.

The Thundershirt is the equivalent of a full body hug.  The hugging sensation does much to soothe the dog and quell anxiety. The Thundershirt come in sizes ranging  from XXS which fits dogs with a chest circumference from 9 to 13 ½ inches up to XXL fitting 38 to 50 inches.

For around $40, you can calm your dog without the need for medication.  It’s machine washable and comes in various colors.

Something to Try

I would give Thundershirt a try, but my dog is naturally calm and laid back.  Thunderstorms, loud noises and the like don’t stress him out.  I’m afraid that if I put a Thundershirt on him, he’d turn into a non moving household ornament that is activated only by the sound of food in his bowl.

If your dog gets a little high strung during certain events and you have $40 to spare.  Give the Thundershirt a try.  Your dog may thank you for it.
