How to Age with a Perfect MemoryJanuary 29, 2008
If you've ever struggled with remembering the 'great idea' you had on the way to work, or the resolution to that nagging problem that came to you while commuting on the train only Make a note to run out to get the Sony Digital Recorder (yes, write it down before you forget). The Sony Digital recorder is a nifty little recording device. It's a small device and weighs practically nothing. It's small enough to fit in the tiniest of pocketbooks or, if you have the proper accessory, you can wear it around your neck as I do. It may sound strange but I call it my brain. In my advancing years my own memory likes to play the hide and seek game. It spends more time hiding than I spend seeking. My newly purchased brain on the other hand usually hangs around my neck where I can easily find it and use it. Depending on the selected sound quality, I can record anywhere from 29 to 130 hours before its full. Before I max out my recording time, however, I connect my brain to my computer by using the supplied USB cable and perform a brain dump. The voice editing software that comes with my brain converts the recording to a computer-friendly file. For my purposes, I download the recordings into a .wav file. After my brain is downloaded, get this, I click transcribe using the editing software and my file is transcribed into a readable text document. Yes, you heard me (or read me) correctly. Here's an example of how my brain works: I'm driving around performing household errands and a show stopper of an idea for an article hits me. I dictate the entire story to my brain (punctuations included). When I get home, I perform a brain dump onto the computer and click transcribe. I replace my brain around my neck and go back to taking the groceries and other items from the car. While I'm making endless trips to and from the car bringing in the fruits of my errands, my article is being transcribed. By the time I'm done putting everything away, I check my computer and my article is completely transcribed*. I'm a happy camper. The Sony digital recorder runs on 2 AAA batteries and retails for $59.99. It was a spur of the moment purchase and I've since found it a couple of dollars cheaper on Amazon.com I usually welcome the challenges of getting older. I especially enjoy finding devices that help compensate for my various deteriorating parts (you know, like magnifying lenses and bifocals). The Sony digital recording device has helped me tremendously with my memory problem. Now, if I can only figure out where to put my extra pair of eyes since my brain has taken over the spot where my glasses used to hang. Oh well, it's a small price to pay for having a perfect digital memory. That's my two cents and I'm sticking with it! *My system is equipped with Dragon Deluxe Naturally Speaking voice recognition software. As a result, my transcribed files may be little more accurate than those transcribed by the brain's voice editing software alone.
