Hair Extension Care: Give your Hair Extensions the care they deserve

by Carolyn Clayton

HairHair extensions started as a celebrity must have and have ended with more than half the population craving them. Hair extensions can completely transform a person's look by adding length, volume and even color. Most of all, hair extensions seem to add confidence.

There are many ways in which extensions can be applied. Deciding on the best application method is important in order to get the most out of your investment. Equally as important as choosing the right hair extensions is taking the proper care of your hair extensions.

Hair Extension Care:

Once your extensions are applied, be sure to follow the instructions given to you by your stylist. Your stylist knows your hair best and will be able to give advice on the best way to care for your new hair extensions.

The better care you take with your new hair, the longer it will last. Conversely, if you abuse your extensions they will shed and the bonding material will loosen and your hair extension investment will be washed down the drain.

Heat:

One of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to caring for extensions is using too much heat. Heat is your hairs worst enemy; it not only damages your normal hair when used too much, it will damage your hair extensions too.

Shampoo and ConditioningHeat

Before washing your hair brush it thoroughly to remove all tangles. Always use a downward motion when washing your hair to avoid creating new tangles. If your hair and extensions are very dry (non conditioned), be careful when immersing your hair and extensions in water as water applied to very dry hair has the potential to make the hair swell, which can tangle your hair and may even break the extension bonds.

Care while sleeping or exercising?

Never sleep on wet hair. Make sure that you have brushed it before getting into bed. It is also be a good idea to loosely tie the hair back while sleeping and/or exercising to help prevent tangling. Brushing out tangles puts a lot of pressure on the hair and will most likely cause damage to the hair extensions and promote bond loosening. If the bond loosens then the extensions will detach and fall out.

Swimmers should wear a swimming cap as the chlorine in pool water and the salt in sea water can weaken the extension bonds. Hair

Hair Products

Stick to the products recommended by your stylist and never overload your hair with products they cause product build up and tangling. Avoid hair products that contain alcohol because it will dry your hair out. Use shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments that are PH balanced because they gently but effectively clean, protect and condition your hair

Proper hair extension care takes a little extra work but that little bit of extra care will make all the difference to your hair extensions; a difference that will be highly noticeable.
