What to Do with Leftover Steak

E-mail Print

You pay a lot of money for steak that you buy from the deli section of your supermarket or the prepared chilled food sections. Don't let the leftovers go to waste.

Cooked leftover steaks will taste good for about three days. Try slicing them tissue paper thin and using the steak as a sandwich filling or as a warm topping on a salad sprinkled with your favorite dressing.

Restaurant LeftOver Steak Tip

One well known restaurant in Boston offers a warm steak salad with endive and tomato and blue cheese dressing. The steak is rare, warm, sliced in 1/2 inch medallions. The salad is cold and the taste is divine.

Why not try doing a similar thing with your leftover steak. Just be careful when reheating the leftover steak. You don't want to dry it out. This method works best with steaks that were originally cooked rare or medium.

Save Steak for a Later Day

You can also freeze cooked steak for future use. Make sure to freeze the left overs within a day or so to ensure freshness. Freeze them in separate portions and defrost in fridge overnight when you're ready to use them. Ever try leftover steak slivers in eggs?

Create Gravy for Dry Steak

If the steak was originally well done, it gets a bit tough (and dry) if its reheated to use for a sandwich or salad. The best way to use left over steak that was thoroughly cooked is to moisten it up by cooking it in a gravy.

Use your imagination. A little broth (chicken or beef), a few slices of onion, salt, pepper and garlic adds moisture and flavor. Be sure to thicken the gravy with a little flour. There's nothing better than a savory smooth steak gravy ladeled over a bed of rice or even mashed or baked potatos.

Tips for Freezing Left Over Steak

For the initial freezing, measure out small portions. Use little sandwich bags for each 4 or 6 ounce portion. Put them all in a labeled freezer bag or container. Be sure to list the date when the steak was cooked and frozen. This helps to prevent 3 year old steak from sitting in the freezer.

If your initial preparation included a sauce such as barbecue sauce, you can freeze that too. Just make sure that you place the steak and the sauce in an area of the freezer that prevents the sauce filled bag from slipping between the rungs on the shelf. It's extremely difficult to pull a frozen solid bag of steak and sauce from between shelf rungs.

Freezing and preparing leftover steak is not only economical but its a quick way to prepare a healthy meal.
