How to Cook Long Grained Rice in the Microwave

E-mail Print

For some reason some people to have difficult time when it comes to cooking long-grained rice.  There appears to be a mystery surrounding how to cook the perfect pot of rice.  There are no secrets.  It is extremely easy to cook the perfect pot of rice.  What's even easier is that it can be done in the microwave.

Once you cook rice in the microwave, you'll be hard pressed to spend time cooking it over the stove (unless you want to get fancy and make something like chicken and rice or sausage and rice).  Here's how to cook long-grained rice in the microwave.

Ingredients:

Long-grained rice (preferably Basmati rice, but any long grain will do).
Microwavable container with a lid
Liquid (water, broth or stock)
Seasonings (optional)

How to Cook the Rice:Rice

  1. Learn the rice to water ratio.  That's the big "trick" to cooking perfect rice.  The ratio is two to one.  For every cup of uncooked rice you need two cups of liquid.  The liquid could be water or for more pizzazz it could be chicken stock, vegetable stock or your favorite broth.
  2. Measure out the amount of uncooked rice you would like to cook.  If you're just trying it out for the first time, go small, use one cup of uncooked rice.
  3. Wash the rice.  Place the long-grained rice in a strainer and run water over it to remove the most obvious impurities.  Pick out any burnt rice grains or foreign particles before cooking the rice.
  4. Place two cups of liquid in the microwavable container (if you're cooking 2 cups of raw rice use 4 cups of liquid).  Make sure the container is large enough to hold the combination of liquid and rice with room to spare.  If the container is too small or shallow, the liquid will bubble and spill over the sides of the container.  Not only will that make a mess in the microwave, it will affect the liquid to rice ratio.
  5. Add the rice to the liquid, stir to make sure the rice is not clumped, cover the container and place it in the microwave.
  6. Nuke the rice for 8-10 minutes.  The amount of time it takes to microwave rice varies on the amount of rice in the container and the power of the microwave.  The beauty of this recipe is that the rice will continue to cook in the heated liquid until all of the liquid is absorbed.  So, if you accidentally remove the rice a little too early, it's ok.  The rice will continue to cook until there is no more liquid.  It just takes longer to cook than if you had left it in the microwave.

The first few times you cook long-grained rice in the microwave you should check the rice to see how it's progressing.  Check that the water isn't bubbling over.  Reducing the cook power or transferring the rice to a larger container will stop the liquid from bubbling over.

After you have cooked rice in the microwave a few times you'll get a better feeling for how many minutes it takes for rice to cook in your own microwave.
